Pocket PC 2002/2003 Wireless Network Setup Instructions
Using the AEGIS Client

Note:  If you have the new Dell Axim (X30, X50, X50v, etc.) with the Odyssey Client, click here for the Odyssey Client instructions.  If you have a Dell Axim X30 that does not come with the Odyssey Client, or if you have any other PocketPC PDA, then proceed with the instructions below.

SBUH Network Services has performed tests with PocketPC PDAs on the current wireless network.  Because the SBUH & HSC wireless network requires user authentication, this must either be included in the operating system or a client must be installed.  Microsoft has now included an authentication client in their Mobile PocketPC 2003 operating system.  Unfortunately, after much testing this client has proven very unreliable.  Instead, it is recommended that you use the SBUH-provided AEGIS Client.  This client will replace the current wireless application built into the handheld.

This client will be installed from a desktop computer where your PDA docks.  This computer will need access to the SBUH network.  Additionally, all the screenshots and instructions were created on a PocketPC with the 2003 version on it so there may be some differences if you are installing on the 2002 version.  If you do not have a PC or need help installing this application, please contact the Helpdesk at 4-HELP and request that we install the software for you.

Please note that we have tested several PocketPCs with this client successfully, including:  Compaq Ipaq 3650, 4150, 4350;  and Toshiba e740.

  1. Make sure you have a computer that is properly connected to the SBUH&HSC Network (either wired or wireless).
  2. Make sure you have your PDA docked and ActiveSync installed and communicating with the PDA before proceeding.
  3. Make sure that the date and time are set correctly on your PDA.  If they are not correct (within an hour), the client will fail.
  4. Make sure your PDAs wireless card is turned ON.  On many PDAs you need to enable them via a program, like the one below.

  1. Open the web browser on your PC and download the uhsb certificate.

In the “Server name must be” dialog box, type in:

And make sure the “must contain domain name” button is selected.

Click OK

  1. You should now see the main AEGIS Client screen showing your network interfaces and the current status of the client (below):

  1. Unselect the interface by clicking in the empty white area of the screen and then selecting the interface again (in this case ACX100).  You will notice a menu pop up.  This will allow you enable or disable the interface.  In this case because we are still setting up the client, select the CONFIGURE menu item.

  1. When your screen looks like the one above, click the OK button on the bottom.

  1. You should now be back at the Main AEGIS Client Status Screen as shown below.  The column for “State” should show the current status for connection.  There are several items that could be shown here.  The best is “Authenticated” because you are connected to the wireless network and the handheld is ready for use.  It may take up to one minute for the handheld to authenticate correctly the first time.  If your PC is not located where there is currently wireless access, you will need to take the PDA where there is coverage for it to authenticate.

  1. You do not need to leave this window open in the future, but can click on the “X” at the top right to close it.  If you leave the covered SBUH wireless area, change settings or perform other functions and can not Authenticate again, you can restart the client by clicking on the “Client” menu item on the bottom and selecting Restart.

  1. If you close the client and are brought back to the main PocketPC welcome screen, you will notice that on the bottom right of the screen is a small logo with a house.  This is the AEGIS client running.  The colors will change on the logo depending on whether you are not connected, or authenticated.  Green means you are Authenticated.  If you click on the icon, you can open the client.

  1. Some of the other colors that might be here are:

Yellow: Authentication has started.

Green:              Successful authentication.

Orange:            Associated to wireless, but no response to authentication request.

Red:                 Failure

  1. If you open Internet Explorer and receive a message that you Cannot Connect and setting up a proxy (see below), you may need to tell the PDA that you are connected to the Internet.

  1. Click on the SETTINGS item (as shown above) and you will see the window below:

  1. Click ADVANCED and you will see the window below.  Click the NETWORK CARD button.

  1. On the “Configure Wireless Networks” screen below, select the Network Adapters tab on the bottom of the screen.

  1. On the screen that appears, make sure that the selection for “My Network Card Connects to:” has selected “The Internet” and click OK on the top right.

After you have changed this, try Internet Explorer again.  If you still have problems, please contact the SBUH Helpdesk.

Accessing Other Wireless Networks Besides SBUH’s

If you wish to use your handheld on other wireless networks besides SBUH’s, you will need to read the section below.  If you do not plan on using other wireless networks, please skip this section.

Since the AEGIS Client that has been installed has taken the place of the built-in Microsoft wireless setup screens, you will need to add your home or other network in.

To do this:

  1. Open the client by clicking on the House icon on the bottom right of the screen or opening the Programs menu and selecting the “Meetinghouse AEGIS Client”.
  2. On the AEGIS Main Screen, unselect the network interface by clicking on the white area of the screen and then selecting the interface again (in this case ACX100).  A menu should appear on the upper right.  Select CONFIGURE.

  1. You will need to enter your home or other wireless location information in the following windows.  Each setup will be different depending on security, but in most cases you will want to select the “Associate with any available network” to have your PDA try and connect to any available network.  If you want to connect to a specific network, uncheck the “Associate with any available network” and click the “Do Active Scan”.  Lastly you will want to add the SSID you were given to the Network Name box.  If this network uses no authentication, leave the “Authentication Profile” set as default.

  1. If you are using WEP encryption or WPA for security on this other network, you can enter the appropriate information in the fields on the two remaining bottom tabs labeled “WEP Mgmt” and “WPA Settings”

NOTE:

Please note that if you setup several wireless networks, you should change the order of them in the Configured Networks section of the client so that the one where you are currently located is on top.  This will allow to the client to look to this network first.
