Apple Macintosh 802.1X Authentication Configuration

NOTE: You must update your Mac OS X software to the latest patch release (10.5.6 at the time of this writing) in order to resolve some known issues with wireless network setups.

1. For Macintosh laptops that use the Airport wireless adapter, if you are in an area in SBUMC where there is wireless network coverage, click on the "wireless network" icon on the upper right section of your toolbar and select the sbuh network.

2. Next, open Sarari or any web browser and go to any website. You will be redirected to the SBUMC guest wireless portal. Click on the button Accept & Connect to be connected to the internet.

3. Click here to download the UHSB Root Certificate on your downloads folder. Once downloaded, open your downloads folder and double-click on the file uhsb.crt.

4. You will be prompted on adding this certificate. Make sure the "Keychain:" selection says login. Click OK to continue.

5. Since this is a self-signed certificate, it is not automatically trusted. Click Always Trust -- this will accept it as a trusted certificate authority and will allow you to use it without always prompting you each time you connect to the wireless network.

6. To ensure that only an authorized user is adding a certificate authority on this machine, you must login with your Mac notebook user account.

7. Once the certificate has been successfully added, you may close any open dialog boxes or windows like the one below (Keychain Access utility).

8. Click on the "wireless network" icon on the upper right section of your toolbar and select Open Network Preferences...

9. Click Advanced...

10. Under the "AirPort" tab, select the preferred network sbuh and click on the minus (-) sign to remove it.

11. Click OK on the AirPort window.

12. Click Apply on the Network Preferences window.

13. Click Advanced again to return to the AirPort settings.

14. Click on the "802.1X" tab, then click on the plus (+) symbol and select Add User Profile.

15. Enter the following information for the 802.1X user profile:

User Profiles: [Give it a descriptive name such as UHSB Wireless Profile.]
User Name: [Enter UHMC\username where "username" is your UHMC account username.]
Password: [Enter your UHMC account password.]
Wireless Network: [Enter UHSB-Wireless in the drop-down list.]
Authentication: [Make sure that PEAP is checked and uncheck all other types.]

16. Click on PEAP from the Authentication selections, then click Configure... to configure PEAP. In the "Outer Identity:" field, enter "anonymous" then click OK.

17. Click OK to accept these settings for this 802.1X user profile.

18. Click Apply on the Network Preferences window.

19. Click Advanced again to return to the AirPort settings one last time.

20. Under the "AirPort" tab, click on the plus (+) symbol to add a preferred wireless network.

21. Enter the following information for this network:

Network Name: [Enter UHSB-Wireless.]
Security: [Select 802.1X WEP from the drop-down list.]
User Name: [Enter UHMC\username where "username" is your UHMC account username.]
Password: [Enter your UHMC account password.]
802.1X: [Select the 802.1X user profile you just created; in this example, we will select UHSB Wireless Profile from the drop-down list.]

Check the box "Remember this network" then click Add to continue.

22. Click Apply on the Network Preferences window.

23. Click on the "wireless network" icon on the upper right section of your toolbar and select Turn AirPort Off...

Then click on the "wireless network" icon again and select Turn AirPort On.

This will cause your computer to disconnect from the old network connection and find the newly configured "UHSB-Wireless" network setup.

The 802.1X Authentication Setup is now complete. You should automatically connect to "UHSB-Wireless" as shown in the AirPort drop-down list below:
